Double chin liposuction is a procedure that requires great precision and a skilled, experienced surgeon to achieve good results. The skin will contract nicely and firmly under the chin, and many people find that they have a more appealing profile after chin liposuction.

Neck liposuction - Buffalo hump

This is a less common procedure, but is increasingly being performed with good results and satisfied patients. Some people have a build-up of fat in the neck that they find annoying. With liposuction, the skin will contract well. Read more about buffalo hump here.

Consultation and feasibility study

Before any surgery, you will be scheduled for a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons. Book an appointment with our plastic surgeons for a non-binding consultation.

During the consultation the plastic surgeon will listen to the individual's wishes and needs.

One of the goals of the consultation is to answer all the questions the individual may have. To achieve this, we set aside plenty of time. After the consultation, you should have a good overview of which treatment options may be relevant and what advantages or disadvantages the various options offer.

Together, you will then agree on which treatment may be relevant.

On arrival at the clinic one of our employees will hand out a form to fill out in the waiting area. The consultation itself begins in the doctor's office, where you start by going through what the individual wants an assessment of.

The dialog between the patient and the plastic surgeon is crucial in determining the best treatment. Information such as previous illnesses, allergies, regular medication and the like is reviewed while the surgeon writes the patient's medical records.

In each office, we have a sheltered changing area where the patient undresses as necessary. Photos are normally documented as a standard part of the medical record information. The system we use for photo documentation is approved and in line with GDPR.

The surgeon will then carry out the necessary examinations of the area in question and make recommendations regarding treatment options.

During the consultation, the surgeon tries to form as realistic a picture as possible of what the individual can expect after an operation.

Our goal at Klinikk A is for every patient to be satisfied with their choicesand that the decision-making basis is the best possible when the choice is made. Well-informed patients make good choices.

The day of the operation

  • Surgery under general anesthesia
  • Meet fasting
  • The operation takes about 1 hour

The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia.

Patients arrive fasting on Klinikk A the day of surgery, have washed with Hibiscrub and taken prescribed medication. You should not eat or drink during the last 6 hours before surgery except for prescribed medication. In practice, this usually means that you should not eat or drink before surgery on the day of surgery.

The anesthesia staff have a short chat to make sure everything is ready for the anesthesia.
After this, you will be taken to the plastic surgeon where you clarify any questions, undress before the surgeon's endorsements and put on the clinic's dressing gown and slippers.

Personal clothing and valuables is placed in a box that follows the patient throughout their stay at the clinic.

After this, you will be taken to the operating room where you will be met by the surgical nurse and the anesthesia staff.

The patient is now prepared for the operation. This means that the surgical field is washed and covered with sterile material, you lie down in the correct position on the operating table and intravenous access for the anesthetics is secured with a small prick in the arm.

You fall asleep quickly when anesthesia beginsand most people describe a good and comfortable sleep when they wake up.

The operation itself takes a short hourand you don't notice anything about the operation itself.

The first time after surgery

Key points:

  • Pain relief: Most people experience discomfort, but rarely direct pain.
  • After the operation: You will be taken care of by our staff in the post-operative ward.
  • Recovery: Normal activity can be gradually resumed after 7-10 days, exercise after 3-4 weeks.
  • Medicines: Temporary agitation or fatigue may occur due to medication.

Immediately after the operation:
Once the operation is complete, you will be transferred to our post-operative ward. Here, our experienced staff will make sure you have a safe and comfortable recovery. Once you're awake, you'll be given something to drink and a light snack.

The first few hours:
It's common to feel a little tired and unrested, or experience temporary anxiety and restlessness during the first 24-48 hours. This is due to the medication given during and after the operation.

How are the days after the operation?

The first few days:

  • You may feel some discomfort in the operated area, but this usually subsides within 7-10 days.
  • It is recommended to stick to quiet activity for the first 2-3 days.

Further activity:

  • Simple, everyday activity can be resumed gradually after the first few days, but listen to your body.
  • After 7-10 days, activity can be gently increased.
  • Exercise should be postponed for 3-4 weeks and it is important to adapt the intensity to the body's signals.

Control after surgery

First check:

The first check-up takes place approximately 7 days after the operation on Klinikk A. Here we check that everything is going well and that the healing process is on track.

Long-term follow-up:

The final result of the operation can only be seen after a longer period of time. That's why we schedule your next check-up in 6-12 months.

What happens to the tissue after surgery?

Swelling and healing:
  • Immediately after the operation: The operated area will be swollen, which is completely normal.
  • The first few days: The swelling may increase, but usually begins to subside after 3-10 days.
  • After three weeks: Much of the swelling has gone down and the tissue is starting to stabilize.
Maturation phase: After the initial healing phase, the body needs time to adapt. The tissue in the operated area gradually becomes stronger and more permanent. This process, called the maturation phase, can last up to two years, but does not normally affect your everyday life.

Exercise after surgery

When can I start exercising again?

  • The first 1-2 weeks: Avoid activities that increase your heart rate or require large movements.
  • After 2 weeks: Gradual increase of activity is possible.
  • After 3-4 weeks: Most people can resume normal exercise, but always listen to your body.

What about work and everyday activities?

  • Office worker: Many people are able to return to work the day after surgery, as long as the collar that will be worn for the first week is not an obstacle.
  • Daily activities: Light, everyday activity can be resumed gradually after the first few days.

Remember that the body needs time to adapt after surgery. If you have any questions about physical activity or the healing process, please contact us. We are here to give you advice and support.

Complications

General risk

All surgeries involve some risk of complications. However, the risk of double chin surgery is low.

Common complications and what you should be aware of:

1. Bleeding:

  • When can it occur?
Bleeding usually occurs before you leave the clinic, but can also occur at home, usually within the first 48 hours.

  • How is it noticeable?
A rapid onset of bursting and swelling in the area may indicate bleeding. This is often because a small vein has opened up.

  • What to do if that happens?
The bleeding is usually harmless, but may require a reoperation to remove the blood and stop the bleeding. Our surgeons are available 24 hours a day, all year round, to quickly treat such situations. Proper and fast treatment ensures that the bleeding does not affect the end result.

  • Prevention:
Follow all post-operative advice carefully, read the information leaflet you've been given, and make sure you stay calm for the first few days after the procedure.

2. Infection:

  • Symptoms of infection:

    • Increasing redness, swelling or tenderness in the area.
    • Secretion of pus from the surgical wound.
    • General feeling of illness.
  • What should you do?
If there are signs of infection, contact the surgeon for assessment. Wound dressing changes are often sufficient, and in some cases antibiotic treatment may be necessary.

3. Changed sensation in the skin:

  • What could happen?
Some people experience altered sensation in the skin over the scar. This may include reduced sensation or increased sensitivity to touch.

  • Will it normalize?
In most cases, the feeling will normalize over time.

Our surgeons are always available to ensure you get the follow-up you need. Get in touch if you experience anything abnormal or have any questions about the healing process.

Frequently asked questions

Is double chin liposuction safe?

Fat accumulation under the chin is safely and effectively treated with liposuction, also known as liposculpture. The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia, but it is also possible to use local anesthesia with sedation. During the operation, the area to be liposuctioned is filled with anesthetic fluid that prepares the tissue for liposuction. The liposuction itself is performed with thin cannulas that use a vacuum to remove the fat cells. There are usually 1 to 2 stitches that need to be removed.

There are also other methods of treating a double chin. Sometimes a facelift with a neck lift can be the best option. Read more about facelifts here.

Where do you get scars after surgery?

There are usually 1 to 3 small scars after surgery. These are closed with 1 to 2 stitches that are removed after 1 to 2 weeks. The scars are placed so that they are as inconspicuous as possible near the area to be operated on. The maximum length of the scars is 10 mm.

Who can be treated for double chin?

Loose skin or fat accumulation under the chin is perceived by some as cosmetically unsightly.

Some people have congenital fullness under the chin, while others develop fullness under the chin with age.

To clarify whether double chin surgery may be relevant, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons. If you live far from Oslo, we can do this via Teams. Book an appointment here.

How to bandage and tape after surgery

Bandages are applied using Micropore tape, an absorbent bandage and a neck bandage/facelift bandage. The neck bandage is used for 1 week, i.e. until the stitches are removed on Klinikk A.
