Breast reduction

Kvinne holder for brystene

In breast reduction, the size of the breasts is reduced and the shape is changed by lifting the breasts and nipples to a position that matches the rest of the body.

Breast reduction is a good surgical solution for women with large and heavy breasts. Large and heavy breasts can cause physical discomfort such as neck and shoulder pain, soreness from bra straps and discomfort during sporting activities. Some people are also bothered by the fact that their breasts are disproportionately large in relation to the rest of their body.

Alternative treatment: Some women are most bothered by sagging breasts. In these cases, a breast lift will often be the best solution. In the case of a breast lift the breasts are not reduced in size, but their shape is changed by lifting the breasts and nipples to a position that matches the rest of the body. To determine what might be right for you, we recommend that you book a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons. Book an appointment here.

Frequently asked questions about breast reductions

Who is suitable for breast reduction?

In general, all women with large and heavy breasts who are in good health and have a normal posture may be suitable for breast reduction.
Women with large breasts may suffer from neck and shoulder pain, soreness in the folds under the breasts, soreness from bra straps, discomfort during sports activities and embarrassment due to the size of the bust. If you have large breasts and some of the symptoms mentioned above, breast reduction may be a good solution. Many people with these symptoms experience a significant improvement in their symptoms, and many get rid of their symptoms completely.
Pain in the neck and shoulders can have several causes, but those caused by heavy breasts are effectively treated with breast reduction.

The link between large breasts and back, neck and shoulder pain is sometimes under-communicated as a women's health issue. Some women have suffered from neck and shoulder problems all their adult lives, and have visited physiotherapists, chiropractors and even been on sick leave because of their problems. When these women have finally undergone surgery and had their breast size reduced, our experience is often that they have more or less completely got rid of their problems, thereby significantly improving their quality of life.

When is it right to perform a breast reduction?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to what is the right time in life to have a breast reduction.
Some women undergo surgery as early as the age of 16. Surgery at such an early age usually takes place in a public hospital. Furthermore, some women are so troubled that they are operated on as young adults. In general, it is recommended to wait with breast reduction until you have finished any pregnancies and breastfeeding, as long as the symptoms are not too pronounced. The size and shape of the breasts are often affected by hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding. For most people, the breasts become larger during this phase and then become smaller again after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Many women find that their breasts become saggier and more pendulous during this phase of life. However, some women find that their breasts continue to increase in volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding, despite their weight remaining stable. In other words, there are individual differences when it comes to breast development throughout the phases of life.

Mammography before surgery

Mammography should be performed less than 6 months before a breast reduction for women over the age of 40. You can visit your GP/your own doctor to get a requisition, or alternatively our plastic surgeons can fill out a mammography requisition.

Consultation - preliminary examination before breast reduction

Before any surgery, you will be given an appointment for a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons. Book an appointment with our plastic surgeons for a non-binding consultation.

Many people wonder what a consultation involves. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will listen to the individual's wishes and needs. One of the goals of the consultation is to answer all the questions the individual may have. To achieve this, we set aside plenty of time. After the consultation, you should have a good overview of which treatment options may be relevant and what advantages or disadvantages the various options offer. Together, you will then agree on which treatment may be appropriate.

When you arrive at the clinic, one of our staff will hand you a form to fill in in the waiting area. The dialog between the patient and the plastic surgeon is crucial for determining the best treatment. Information such as previous illnesses, allergies, regular medication and the like is then reviewed, while the surgeon writes a journal.

In each office, we have a sheltered changing area where the patient undresses as necessary. Photos are normally documented as a standard part of the medical record information. The system we use for photo documentation is approved and in line with GDPR.

The surgeon then performs the necessary examinations of the area in question and makes recommendations regarding treatment options. During the consultation, the surgeon tries to convey as realistic a picture as possible of what the individual can expect after surgery. Our goal at Klinikk A is for each patient to be satisfied with their choices, and for the decision-making basis to be as good as possible when the choice is made. Well-informed patients make good choices.

Before and after pictures of breast reduction

It is not permitted to show before and after pictures on websites in Norway. During the consultation, however, it is permitted to show before and after pictures. The surgeon can then show examples of patients who have undergone similar operations.

The first time after breast reduction - experiences after surgery

In our experience, most patients have a smooth recovery after breast reduction. Many wonder how painful it is after such an operation. Patients' experiences when it comes to pain vary. Most describe some discomfort and there are usually no reports of direct pain. How the individual experiences the first period after surgery varies from person to person. Klinikk A uses a method of surgery and anesthesia that means patients rarely experience intense pain in the first two days after surgery.

Once the operation is complete, patients are transferred to our post-operative ward, where our staff look after them. As you wake up, you will be given something to drink and something light to eat. Some people will feel a little restless and fidgety for the first 24-48 hours. This is due to the medication given. During the first few days, most people experience some degree of discomfort in the operated area. This will normally subside during the first few days after surgery.

For the first two to three days, strive for very quiet activity. Then you can gradually resume simple, everyday activity and walk carefully upstairs, but still take care and listen to your body. After 7 to 10 days, activity can be gradually increased. You can start exercising gently three weeks after surgery.

Bandage and tape after breast reduction

During the operation, Micropore tape is applied directly to the scars. Absorbent bandages are placed over this. These absorbent bandages are removed at the first shower. The tape attached to the skin should not be removed before the first check-up at Klinikk A after 7 to 14 days. The tape will become damp when you shower, but it will air dry quickly, or alternatively it can be dried gently with a hairdryer. You can shower 4 days after surgery.

When can I shower after surgery?

You can shower on the 4th day after surgery. The tape that sits over the surgical wound should be left on when you shower. You can blow-dry it after showering, or just let it air-dry. The tape should be left on until you come for your first check-up after about 8 days.
