What is eyelid surgery?
With age, the skin loses elasticity, which can lead to drooping upper eyelids or bags under the eyes. These changes can be partly hereditary and are often caused by a combination of excess skin, bulging fatty tissue and weakened muscles around the eyes.
Eyelid surgery involves the removal of excess skin, tightening of muscles and reduction of fatty tissue to improve both the appearance and function of the eye area.

Who is suitable for eyelid surgery?
You may be a good candidate for the surgery if you:
- Has loose skin on the upper eyelid that gives a heavy look.
- Experiencing bags under the eyes due to bulging fatty tissue.
- Has a reduced field of vision due to drooping eyelids.
During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will assess your individual situation. In some cases, a brow lift or forehead lift may be a better solution if heavy eyelids are caused by sagging brows.
How does the operation work?
Preparations
Before the operation, you'll meet the surgeon for a thorough consultation to discuss your goals and expectations. The surgeon will outline the surgical area and provide you with information about anesthesia and the procedure itself.
The day of the operation
You register at reception and meet the surgeon for registration and final clarifications.
- Duration: The procedure typically takes between 30 minutes and 2.5 hours, depending on the extent.
- Anesthesia: The operation is often performed under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia may be necessary for major procedures.
- Day surgery: You can go home the same day, usually 1-2 hours after surgery.
After the operation
You may experience some swelling and bruising in the first few weeks. Your surgeon will give you clear guidelines on pain relief, hygiene and activities for optimal recovery.
Recovery and the time after
- Swelling and bruising: Expect some swelling for about 1 week. Use cooling goggles or cold compresses to reduce this.
- Stitch removal: The stitches are removed after 7-8 days and the scars must be protected from sunlight with SPF 50 for at least 12 months.
- Activity level: Avoid physical exertion and activities that increase blood pressure for the first 3 weeks.
Follow-up is recommended after 3-6 months to assess the result.
Swelling and pain:
Swelling and bruising are common and usually subside after 1-2 weeks.
Ball bags or ice packs can reduce swelling.
Hygiene:
Shower after two days, but avoid water directly on the eyes.
Do not remove the tape over the stitches yourself.
Activity:
Rest is recommended for the first few days.
Avoid exercise and strenuous activities for the first three weeks.
Sun protection:
Wear sunglasses and sunscreen with factor 50 on the scars for at least 12 months.

Frequently asked questions
What is eyelid surgery?
An eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, fat and muscle tissue around the eyes. This helps reduce drooping eyelids and bags under the eyes, both for a fresher look and improved field of vision.
Who is suitable for eyelid surgery?
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Has sagging skin on the upper eyelid.
- Experiencing bags under the eyes that give a tired appearance.
- Has a reduced field of vision due to heavy eyelids.
Your plastic surgeon will assess your situation to find the best solution for you.
How does the eyelid surgery work?
The operation is usually performed as day surgery and you can go home the same day. The procedure takes 30 minutes to 2.5 hours, depending on whether you are having upper and/or lower eyelid surgery. Local anesthesia is most often used, but general anesthesia may be required for major operations.
What can I expect after surgery?
Most people experience some swelling and bruising for up to 2-3 weeks. You'll receive detailed instructions on hygiene, pain relief and how to protect the eye area to ensure a good recovery. The result is usually visible after a few weeks, but the final result can take 3-6 months.
Does the operation hurt?
The operation itself is painless due to anesthesia. After the procedure, there may be some discomfort when the local anesthesia wears off, but the pain is often mild and can be managed with painkillers.
Do I get sick leave after the operation?
Sick leave is only relevant if the procedure has a medical indication, for example if drooping eyelids affect vision. This will be decided during the consultation.
