Excessive sweating - hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis as it's known in the trade, is a condition that is far more common among the population than you might think. Approximately 150,000 Norwegians are affected by this disease to varying degrees, but many don't seek help because they don't realize that this is something that can be easily remedied.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition with increased sweat production regardless of activity level and temperature. The condition is completely harmless, but can affect the self-image and quality of life of the individual concerned.
Treatment with medical injections inhibits signal transmission from the nerves to the sweat glands, so that less sweat is produced. The treatment is relatively simple and the effect usually lasts from 6 months to 1 year.

Who is suitable for treatment?

People with excessive sweating problems are suitable for treatment. Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes sweat production to increase significantly, often in specific areas such as the feet, hands, face, armpits and scalp. However, sweat can also be localized elsewhere on the body, such as the groin, chest and back.

Injection therapy is effective and often works well for those who have tried conservative treatment and still have problems. Conservative treatment consists of, among other things:

Aluminum chloride 20 percent concentration can be applied to the affected areas up to once a day for periods of time. For some people this can have a good effect, especially in the armpits. On the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and on the chest and back, the effect is more variable. This is usually well tolerated, but some people are hypersensitive to the product.

Iontophoresis is a hand or foot bath treatment where a weak electric current is passed through the water bath. This treatment takes half an hour and must be done three times a week for a few weeks before the effect can be assessed. The maintenance treatment usually requires weekly treatment after this.

How does injection therapy work for excessive sweating?

The injection treatment blocks the nerve signals to the sweat glands. In this way, the sweat glands are not stimulated to secrete sweat, and the sweat produced is reduced. The sweat glands are still intact and will still secrete some, but significantly less than before the injection treatment.

How does this injection treatment work?

The treatment consists of a series of small pricks with very thin needles that are inserted just under the skin. The treatment lasts approximately 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Prior to treatment, those who wish to receive anesthetic cream to make the pricks less uncomfortable.

How long does the treatment last?

The effect of such treatment lasts for 6-12 months. The actual effect of the treatment does not appear until 6-14 days have passed. Some people find that the effect lasts longer after a few rounds of treatment. For a lasting effect, the treatment must be repeated when the effect begins to wane. This can be agreed on a regular basis, or when needed.

Permanent removal of sweat glands by surgery

Surgery may be an option for those who are bothered by excessive sweating in the armpit. There are several surgeries that may be appropriate, and we have a staircase model at Klinikk A for which surgery is appropriate. If other treatments are unsuccessful under the arms, or if you want a definitive treatment, the first choice for surgery is removal of the sweat glands in this area using a liposuction technique. Approximately 9 out of 10 get a lasting improvement from this operation. Around 1 in 10 do not achieve their goal with this operation. For this group of patients, we can offer an operation where the sweat glands are removed using the so-called open technique. With this method, the vast majority reach their goal.

In the past, surgery was performed on the nerves that control sweating in the upper body and head and neck area, known as sympathectomy. This surgery is no longer performed due to undesirable effects, including compensatory sweating elsewhere on the body. These operations were irreversible, but are no longer performed.

How do I look directly after treatment?

Directly after treatment, you may see small raised bumps in the skin, these are temporary. In some cases, you may experience the odd bruise, but this is temporary and often easy to make up if you wish.

Who can't be treated?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is not recommended to perform this treatment. The treatment is also not suitable for people with specific skin conditions. Consult your dermatologist in advance if you are unsure.

What should I avoid directly after treatment?

Avoid training and sauna on the same day.

Cancellation and cancellation deadline

The consultation with the nurse is free of charge. If canceled less than 24 hours in advance, or in case of no-show, NOK 600 will be charged. This applies to the consultation with the nurse.

Who performs the treatment?

The treatment is carried out by a cosmetic dermatology nurse at the clinic. The practitioner always sets aside enough time to make a thorough assessment when you come for a consultation, so that you get the result you are looking for. Responsible doctor

Plastic surgeon Dr. Ståle Buhagen is medically responsible for Klinikk A. At Klinikk A, we have an interdisciplinary approach to medical skin treatment, with access to a plastic surgeon at all times. The patient's safety and security is the most important thing to ensure proper treatment. Fortunately, the authorities' regulation of injection treatment has become stricter, and there is now a requirement for a doctor to be present at clinics that perform injection treatment.
