Once you've made the decision to have varicose vein surgery, it's important to be aware of what happens before, during and after the procedure. Here we give you an overview of what to expect at the different stages of the process.
Before surgery, you will receive the necessary written information. An e-prescription for painkillers and preventive antibiotics will be submitted. We recommend that this is collected a few days before surgery.
On the day of surgery, you will be welcomed by our experienced team at the clinic. You will be prepared for the procedure and information about what will happen during the operation will be reviewed. You will be given a thorough examination, prepared for anesthesia and given medication as needed. If an operation under general anesthesia has been agreed, you must be fasting for the last 6 hours before the operation.
You will greet the surgeon who will make the necessary markings on the skin before the operation. If you have any specific questions or concerns, we will be available to answer them before the surgery starts. Our team will make every effort to ensure you feel calm and confident before the procedure.
After your varicose vein surgery, you will be closely monitored by our medical staff to ensure a good recovery. You can expect to rest and be observed in our post-operative ward before being discharged the same day.
It is normal to experience some soreness and discomfort in the treated areas after surgery. Pain medication may be prescribed to relieve the discomfort. We recommend following our aftercare instructions carefully to promote rapid healing.
The skin is bandaged with a liquid plaster, Micropore tape and an absorbent Micropore bandage over this. After the operation, a compression bandage or elastic stockings will be applied to support and protect the operated areas. It is important to follow the instructions for bandage and stocking use carefully. You must keep the bandage clean and dry and avoid removing it until authorized by your doctor.
You will be given instructions on how to shower and care for the dressing to promote safe and hygienic healing. At your first shower, you can remove the Mepore dressing, but you should treat the Micropore tape until further notice. Our staff will provide you with all the necessary guidance and answer any questions regarding the dressing.
After surgery, you will have a scheduled follow-up appointment to assess your healing and make sure everything is going as expected. This gives us the opportunity to assess the outcome of the surgery and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
During the follow-up visit, we will also advise you on further follow-up at home, including physical activity, work activities and the use of elastic stockings or other supportive aids. Follow-up is an important part of the treatment process to ensure you get optimal results.
